Sarah Donsbach

Education Background

  • I went to Carmel Clay Schools from K-12 and I have a Bachelor's Degree from Purdue University.

Years as a Fishers Resident? 7

Community Involvement Activities

  • I have been an active member of the New Britton Elementary PTO for 4 years.  I have served on the executive board for 3 years, 1 year as VP and 2 years at President.
  • I am a former Board Member of the Humane Society of Indianapolis.  I have coached Rec soccer through Mudsock Sports and Rec Plus Soccer through Indy Premier.  I am currently the manager of my daughters Indiana Fire Juniors travel soccer team.
  • I am very involved with the Cats Travel Softball program where my step daughter plays and my husband coaches.

Leadership Experience

I am an alumni of the Richard Lugar Excellence in Public Service series.  I have been the president of the New Britton PTO for the last two years and have extensive experience in paid and volunteer coaching

1.  What is your number one reason for wanting to serve on the school board?

I want to serve on the HSE school board because I have a love for public service and I want to ensure ALL students in the HSE district have access to the best education they can.

2. What role does policy play/have in the function of the board?

The boards primary function is policy making.

3. What legislative action at the state level would you support to improve education in our community.

I believe that we should fight for every dollar we can in the school funding formula for our district and students.
I supported HB 1002 that removes the requirement that teacher evaluations be based significantly on student test scores. I would need to see this years proposed legislation to make an educated decision on what legislation to support other than funding in the 2021 session.

4. What do you think is the biggest issue facing your district?

The biggest issue facing HSE is funding and the potential renewal of the operating referendum.  Since HSE is in the bottom 3 of funding per student it is imperative that we review the current referendum that will expire in 2023 and how that will affect our district

5. If you were elected what one thing would you like to accomplish during your term?

I would like to see HSE implement additional phonics and reading programs in our district.  I was diagnosed as dyslexic in 2nd grade after relentless advocacy from my mother.  I know that our district strictly follows the No Child Left Behind policies and has made decisions to implement a phonics and reading curriculum that benefits the majority of students, but this curriculum does not benefit all students.  I would like to see our district implement an additional program such as Orton Gillingham which is national recognized in assisting struggling students with reading and phonics.  Phonics and reading programs are not one size fits all and we need to adjust our curriculum to ensure that all students can learn in the ways that fit their needs.
