For the better part of my 25 year career, I have always had involvement with nonprofit boards. Whether it was helping to create a new nonprofit or simply adding value to an established board, this has been a part of my leadership and community service. In addition to my nonprofit experience, I have operated my employer's training program for Indiana over the past 6 years. Leading this program has given me the opportunity to hire talent in to the training program and help mentor the next generation of financial advisors. Additionally, I have been recognized by the Financial Times as a leader in my industry.
1. What is your number one reason for wanting to serve on the school board?
I would like to bring a planning and management acumen to the HSE School Board. I believe I can help create a process and culture that will improve student outcomes. More accurate planning with attention to short and long-term goals and outcomes will ensure a more accurate and fiscally responsible management of district growth. Implementing an evaluation process for administration will help develop a culture of constant improvement and professional development which will, in turn, benefit our students and community. I feel that bringing this different approach to the district will help add a level of professionalism and accountability that will grow community trust and attract talent to the school district.
2. What role does policy play/have in the function of the board?
Policy is what drives any board. It is the foundation that sets governance, duties and responsibility. Policy can help keep organizations within the compliance of federal, state and local law and regulations.
3. What legislative action at the state level would you support to improve education in our community.
As Hamilton Southeastern Schools is one of the lowest per student funded districts in the state, the top legislative action at the state level would be to maintain the education funding levels even if the current economic environment dictates cuts to the state's overall budget. As the economic environment improves, I would like to see education funding increase. The current funding formula and subsequent low per funding student rate dictate that our community supplement student education. We are not afforded some of the innovative programs and resources that other school districts have because they receive more funding. Consequently, Hamilton Southeastern Schools can not see their funding decreased from levels that are already among the lowest in the state.
4. What do you think is the biggest issue facing your district?
In the coming years, Hamilton Southeastern Schools will likely conduct a superintendent search. It will be critical to hire a superintendent who listens with an open mind to ideas and has a near term & long term vision for our school district. It is also likely that administration will propose a renewal of our referendum. These will be largest issues facing the district in the next couple of years.
5. If you were elected what one thing would you like to accomplish during your term?
If I could only accomplish one thing during my term it would be to build an educational foundation for all students. Hamilton Southeastern Schools is beginning to recognize that not all students learn the same way. We need to be reviewing achievement gaps and developing resources to help prepare students for the next chapter in their life. Through partnerships with the City of Fishers, local businesses or even Polytechnic projects, we can help provide these much needed resources.
