Indianapolis, IN: Now in its fifth year, DIVA Summer Songwriting Camp, a program of The Overture Institute, offers young women (ages 10-16) the opportunity to be immersed in music and songwriting, surrounded by some of the country's most influential professional musicians. Each band will work together for one week to create two original songs with their new friends.On Friday, June 26 at 7PM, the bands will debut their songs on state at the Hilbert Circle Theatre. All are welcome to this spectacular celebration of songwriting and creativity!
Amy Speace and Ron Browning are joining the staff this year as Resident Songwriting Coaches. Amy Speace has written songs that have been recorded by Judy Collins, the late Memphis blues artist Sid Selvidge, Red Molly and others. Her song “The Weight of the World”, which Judy Collins has called “one of the best political folk songs I’ve ever heard” was named as the #4 Folk Song of the Decade by NYC’s premiere AAA radio station WFUV. She has toured and shared the stage with Guy Clark, Nanci Griffith, Ian Hunter, Alejandro Escovedo. Ron Browning is a world-wide, sought-after Voice & Songwriting Coach to the Stars based in Nashville, Tennessee. He works with singers and songwriters from beginners to celebrities in all genres of music and performance. Just a few of Ron’s voice clients include Carrie Underwood (NBC’s The Sound of Music LIVE), Wynonna, Alison Krauss, Patti LaBelle, Keb Mo, and the three new Stars on the Horizon, RaeLynn, Chris Lane, and Allen Stone.
About D.I.V.A. Songwriting Camp: D.I.V.A. stands for Discover, Inspire, Visualize, and Affect. All of which campers are encouraged to do through music during their week in camp and beyond. Campers come from all over the country to study multiple instruments and form a band with their new friends. Under the guidance of a dedicated, professional musician, the bands write two or more original songs throughout the week.
On the final day of camp, friends and family gather for a one-of-a-kind, spectacular unveiling of the bands and their new songs. Campers also spend time in master classes learning proper vocal technique, songwriting practices, and performance skills. This very unique, all-encompassing camp offers experiential, hands-on learning for young women at all levels of musical skill.
About The Overture Institute: The Overture Institute was founded in 2011, and has been responsible for motivating and inspiring young women through the performing arts. It has since expanded its mission to include encouraging women of all ages to express themselves through music and performance.
In 2014, the group changed the name of it’s flagship summer camp, Girls Create Music, to D.I.V.A. Summer Songwriting Camp, taking place for it’s fifth consecutive year in summer 2015 at Hilbert Circle Theatre in Indianapolis, Indiana.
