Kent is a 1961 graduate of Frankfort High School. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University in 1965 and his Juris Doctor degree from Indiana University School of Law in 1968. Following law school, Kent served in the United States Marine Corps from 1968 to 1971 and was stationed in California and Okinawa.
Following his military service, he returned to Frankfort, Indiana, and joined his father's law firm, then known as Ryan & Hartzell. Kent was a practicing lawyer in Frankfort, Indiana for 48 years. He retired from the practice in 2014. Kent’s practice areas included estate planning, tax, corporate, agriculture and trusts.
Kent is a member of the Clinton County Bar Association, Indiana State Bar Association, and American Bar Association. He has served as city attorney, president of the Frankfort Country Club, president of the Clinton County Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the Clinton County Community Foundation, board member and secretary of Clinton County Family YMCA, member of Rotary Club, past president of Clinton County Association for Retarded Citizens, and district chairman for Boys Scouts of America.
Kent and his wife, Linda, reside in Frankfort, Indiana, and they have two grown children, David K. Ryan and Corrie E. Ryan, and a grandson, Alexander, who is 7 years old.
